Alice Neel. My Animals and Other Family
19th November 2014
Victoria Miro Gallery, London
Victoria Miro Gallery, Mayfair, London is showing an exhibition titled Alice Neel. My Animals and Other Family with paintings and drawings of animals and people. The show opened on 13 October and runs until 18 December 2015. It is accompanied by a catalogue with an essay by Kirsty Bell.Although well known for her portraits of people, Neel closely observed animals, both in her apartment in New York City and on the farm in Vermont where her son Hartley and his family lived. Aniumals appeared in her compositions throughout her career and this show includes work from the 1930s through to the 1970s. Her ability to capture the character of a dog or a cat is as sharp as when observing humans.
